Generation Adidas Cup: The Road to the Final is Heating Up
The 2025 Generation Adidas Cup is reaching its dramatic conclusion, with the semifinal matchups now set in both the U-16 and U-18 divisions. With the tournament’s biggest weekend ahead, everything is on the line.
The 2025 edition of the Generation Adidas Cup is reaching its crescendo. After days of grueling group play, heroic moments, and last-minute magic, the semifinalists in both the U-16 and U-18 age groups are locked in — and the tournament’s biggest weekend is upon us.
This year’s edition has shattered expectations, with breakout talents, international firepower, and historic runs by non-MLS academies all converging on one of the most prestigious stages in global youth football. The final chapter begins Saturday.
U-16 Division: Pressure Cookers and Penalty Shootouts
The U-16 quarterfinals gave us everything — goals, heartbreak, and comebacks straight from the script of a Hollywood sports drama.
⚽ PSV Eindhoven 2 (5) – (4) 2 Columbus Crew
One of the tournament’s standout matches saw PSV race to a 2-0 lead behind Jerayno Hunte’s 8th-minute opener and a well-placed finish from Jonas Colaes in the 24th. Columbus looked down and out, especially after missing a penalty right before halftime. But they weren’t done.
Yuriy Rushchak’s stunning free kick breathed life into the Crew in the 54th minute, and Gianmarco Di Noto’s equalizer deep into stoppage time (90+3’) sent the match to penalties. PSV, known for their elite development system, held their nerve and advanced 5-4 in the shootout.
They now face LA Galaxy, who exacted revenge on CF Montreal in a rematch from the group stage. After a tense 0-0 draw, the Galaxy came out on top in penalties, thanks in part to their tactical discipline and resilience under pressure. Montreal had beaten them earlier in the tournament 8-7 in a group-stage shootout. This time, the Galaxy flipped the script and punched their ticket to the semis.
⚽ On the other side of the bracket, KRC Genk continued their impressive run. The Belgian powerhouse has looked sharp all tournament long, and a narrow 1-0 win over Austin FC — courtesy of Prosper Ogbeiwi — showed their ability to manage tight games.
Genk had already eliminated Portland Timbers in the Round of 16 and are now set to face Real Salt Lake, one of the most complete sides in the tournament.
RSL turned up the intensity in the second half against Charlotte FC. After a cagey opening 45 minutes, striker Van Parker changed the tempo after coming off the bench. Nicholas Silva opened the scoring before Parker put the match to bed with a confident finish — sealing a 2-0 win and a date with Genk in the final four.

U-18 Division: Statement Wins and Cinderella Stories
If the U-16 bracket delivered drama, the U-18 bracket doubled down with storylines that have the whole youth soccer world buzzing.
⚽ Colorado Rapids are peaking at the perfect time. After knocking out the New York Red Bulls in the Round of 16, the Rapids followed it up with a commanding 2-0 win over Chicago Fire, fueled by a composed finish from Maxim Scordo in the first half and a clinical strike by Phil Pak in the second.
Their next challenge? A red-hot Atlanta United side that has made a habit of thriving in high-pressure moments.
Atlanta once again leaned on goalkeeper Jonathan Ransom, who delivered another clutch performance in the shootout against Portland Timbers after a 0-0 draw. Ransom, who also played a key role in Atlanta’s earlier shootout win, is emerging as one of the standout players of the tournament.
⚽ The other semifinal features Orlando City, one of the tournament’s most exciting sides, against Santos Laguna — a club rewriting their GA Cup history.
Orlando wasted no time in their quarterfinal, with fullback Omar Robbana firing them ahead within the first minute. From there, they dictated the tempo, never letting Real Salt Lake settle into the game. With confidence, control, and flair, Orlando have shown why they were pegged as contenders from the start.
Santos Laguna, meanwhile, are living a dream. In a tense 1-1 draw against Chicago’s Sockers FC, the Mexican side emerged victorious in a 5-4 shootout. It’s a milestone for both clubs: Sockers became the first non-MLS academy ever to reach a GA Cup quarterfinal, while Santos now find themselves in the semifinals for the first time in club history.
