A Generation of Players Putting U.S. Football on the Map
In a generation where the brightest young talents in the U.S. keep getting younger and its stars seem to be playing like seasoned veterans, it's hard to look past the development of the U.S. game on a global setting, let alone a domestic one. We take a look at the stars making MLS NEXT Pro become a place that showcases the talent this country has within its crop of players, while MLS NEXT had a weekend full of derbies and rivalries that set new expectations for teams across the league, all while analyzing the Americans that are becoming more desirable for clubs across the pond.
Cavan Sullivan's stardom continues to rise. The day after his 15th birthday, Sullivan was the architect of a comeback win in a 2-1 victory over Atlanta United 2. In the final minutes of the match, Cavan Sullivan equalized after a good run by Neil Pierre who sent a cross into the box and Edward Davis set up Sullivan who finished with a fierce shot with his left foot.
Sullivan, named Man of the Match on Sunday, scored his fourth goal of the MLS NEXT Pro season. He has also added four assists in 2024, playing 1,069 minutes.
The strong performances from young Americans continued this weekend. 2008-born defender Isaiah Kaakoush was a hero in his debut for North Texas, scoring a late equalizer in the 90+1 minute to tie the score and send the team to a penalty shootout with a subsequent victory.
Furthermore, Nimfasha Berchimas scored his sixth goal of the season for Crown Legacy. In the 17th minute, the young forward finished in great fashion inside the box to open the scoring in Crown Legacy's game against Inter Miami II. For Miami, 2007-born center forward Mateo Saja scored his first professional goal in the 76th minute.
New York Red Bulls II forward Tanner Rosborough has had a fantastic season. Rosborough scored his seventh goal of the season yesterday and was key to the Red Bulls' victory against New England Revolution II.
Zavier Gonzalo has scored three goals in his last three games and has five goals this season for Real Monarchs. The forward opened the scoring in Real Monarchs' 2-0 win over Portland Timbers 2.
Jonathan Shore scored his eighth goal of the season. The 2007-born midfielder opened the scoring for NYCFC II in the 45+1 minute of a comeback win over FC Cincinnati 2.
In a thrilling 3-2 contest, Harbor Miller made a memorable impact by scoring his first-ever professional goal, a personal milestone despite Ventura County's narrow loss to St. Louis City SC 2. Miller's breakthrough moment came at a pivotal time, showcasing his potential and making a case for his continued rise within the squad.
While the result didn't go Ventura County's way, the team found a second goal through the in-form Ruben Ramos, who netted his eighth goal of the season. Ramos' consistent goal-scoring has made him a key player for Ventura County, further solidifying his role as an attacking threat. His ability to find the back of the net regularly has been a driving force for the team, even in tough matches like this one.

September Roundup in the MLS NEXT
The action this weekend in MLS NEXT has been on fire. Philadelphia Union and Toronto FC U-18 played one of the best matches so far with a resounding 8-4 victory for Philadelphia Union. Union opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a goal from Anisse Saidi, who would finish the match with four goals.
Central midfielder Henry Bernstein would add a goal in the 31st minute and Mexican-American forward Diego Rocio would score a hat-trick, scoring in the 50th, 61st, and 81st minutes. For Toronto FC Antone Rossenberry, Emanuele Cappello and Joshua Nugent scored twice.
Real Salt Lake defeated Seattle Sounders U-18 4-0. Antonio Riquelme opened the scoring in the 11th minute, while left-back Linkon Ream scored twice in the 68th and 73rd minutes. The fourth goal was scored by Jack Ottley who recently joined the academy.
City Showdowns: Rivalries Reignited
The Florida Derby stayed in Orlando, and the purple team managed to beat Inter Miami in both the U-16 and U-18 age groups.
Orlando City secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Inter Miami, with Jakob Garcia shining as the standout performer by netting a brace. Garcia opened the scoring in the 14th minute, and despite Inter Miami's Zidane Cadet equalizing in the 58th minute, Garcia quickly restored Orlando’s lead in the 63rd minute. Right-back Tanner Miller added a third goal in the 78th minute, giving Orlando a comfortable cushion as the match neared its conclusion.
Inter Miami fought back with a late goal from Dominic Igot in the 82nd minute, narrowing the gap to 3-2. Despite mounting pressure from Miami, Orlando City held on to secure the win. Garcia’s double and Miller’s decisive goal were enough to outlast Miami’s late surge, showcasing Orlando’s ability to withstand the opposition's efforts and claim a hard-fought victory.
In the highly anticipated U-18 clash between Orlando City and Inter Miami, the match lived up to expectations with a thrilling 2-1 result in favor of Orlando City. The game kicked off with Inter Miami drawing first blood, as Daniel Pinter capitalized on an opportunity in the 26th minute, putting his team ahead with a well-taken goal. Pinter's strike gave Miami an early advantage, and for much of the first half, it looked as though his effort might set the tone for the match.
However, Orlando City responded, refusing to let the early setback define their performance. Just before halftime, Justin Ellis found the back of the net in the 45th minute, leveling the score and shifting momentum in favor of Orlando City. Ellis' equalizer came at a crucial moment, giving his team a psychological boost heading into the break.
In the second half, the battle continued, with both teams pushing for the lead. The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute when Gustavo Caraballo scored the game-winning goal for Orlando City. Caraballo's goal not only completed the comeback but also solidified Orlando City's dominance in the latter stages of the match.
Americans Embark on European Tour
18-year-old goalkeeper Duran Ferree will join Danish side FC Nordsjælland on loan. Ferree is a familiar face with a familiar pair of gloves to the staff and players of FCN's Superliga. During the winter camp in California, the young American participated several times in training due to his association with San Diego FC.
“Durán is a young and talented goalkeeper who we know very well, having trained with the Superliga squad on several occasions. He has shown himself very well here and we are happy to have him in the goalkeeping group, as we have been looking for the right young profile, who can help fill that position in the Superliga squad and at the same time help in our U19 team, where we also need extra hands.”
Young Yanquis en el Extranjero, 2006-born midfielder, Bento Estrela made his first bench appearance for Sporting's U23s in a 1-0 home win against CF Estrela Amadora U23s. He also appeared on the bench for Sporting's U19s later on in the week in a home draw against Benfica's U19s.
William Lodmell, 2008 born, made the bench for Sporting's U17s in a 6-0 win over Acadómica de Coimbra's U17s. Lodmell was lost involved with the USYNT in a U15 camp in January 2023. 2008-born left-back Wesley Okoduwa started for Wolves U21s today as they drew with Monaco's U21s.
Athletic Club midfielder Xanti Oyharçabal scored two goals in the Basque team's 5-0 victory over CD Getxo. He has five goals in his last three games as he continues to show his strong capabilities as an all-action midfielder who can play from deep and connect in the attacking third.
German American forward Jykese Fields scored twice for the Hoffenheim U19s. Fields, a 2007-born German-American striker and North Dakota native was developed in Germany before moving to the Norwich academy and then making a move to Hoffenheim before last season.
Last season Fields scored and assisted five times in 18 appearances in the U17 Bundesliga. In March, Fields attended the GA Cup as a guest player for FC Cincinnati's U17s, where he scored against the much-hyped Philadelphia Union's U17s. This season Fields has been promoted to the U19s and has gotten off to a strong start, scoring 9 goals in 8 appearances including a dominant 4-goal performance against the Saarbrücken U19s.
